Black Friday is an informal name for the day following Thanksgiving Day in the USA, traditionally the 4th Thursday in November, marking the start of the Christmas shopping season since 1952, though Black Friday did not become widely recognised until the early 2000s’. Interestingly, Black Friday has come to mean differing things around the world and indeed occurs at differing times of the year given any particular country. As to how the name originated, there are various indicators, but more probable, is down to the authorities labelling it such on account of the outbreaks of shopping-rage resulting on this day.

Of course, with the phenomena of internet buying and the convenience it offers, there’s less need to fight it out in the high street stores with other buyers. Here in the Netherlands, the home of Mistral, Black Friday only became in force in 2015 and represents the same message as its USA origins; the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
