Kavika Knight’s passion for sailing began in the 1970s growing up in Tahiti sailing Hobie Cats (his father was the Hobie dealer and organized the 2nd Hobie 14 world championships in Tahiti). Some years later he would sail with Nick Beck on the island of Kaua’i on one of his sailing canoes. That would lay the seed to later adventures with Nick’s Holopuni Sailing Canoe. First in the leeward islands of French Polynesia (Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, and Bora Bora on invitation from Nick in a raid organized by Stephan Lambert) and then around Tahiti, Moorea, Tetiaroa and the Tuamotus with numerous crossings.
The Holopuni Sailing Canoe was a natural evolution from the Hobie Cat as it allowed for inter-island adventures. Today, Kavika is the president of the Association Va’a Ta’ie Tautoru (Tahitian double-ama sailing canoe association), which he co-founded in 2015 to better organize and federate open-ocean sailing canoe owners. Class and championship rules were created to formally organize regattas.
2018 marks the 3rd Championship season. Another annual adventure initiated by Kavika before the creation of the sailing canoe association, is the Holopuni Va’a Hawaiki Nui Voyage, now a race from Tahiti to Bora Bora via Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, and Tahaa. 2018 will be the 9th annual edition of this great event. Mistral is a proud partner for the 2018-2019 Championships and Holopuni Va’a Hawaiki Nui Voyages.
